Fed: Phone bills to rise from today

CANBERRA, Aug 1 AAP - Phone bills will become more costly from today, with Telstrastandard line rentals to rise by $2 a month.

Standard line rentals are to rise by $2 a month to $21.90, with premium rentals to rise by $3.

Also going up will be some call connection fees and retrieval charges for most mobilemessage bank services.

The phone fees hike comes as the federal government says country Australians will continueto have their services upgraded after the full sale of Telstra.

Prime Minister John Howard has tried to allay the fears of many country people, andthe National Party, that the bush would miss out on upgrades and improvements enjoyedby city residents if Telstra was fully privatised.

But winning the Senate over to Telstra's full sale still remains a difficult prospect, with new Greens Senator Kerry Nettle saying the government should consider renationalisingthe telco.

Federal cabinet this week discussed more elements of Telstra's sale, including an inquiryinto bush services demanded by the National Party.
